Alfred P. Langer, 88, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Edgewood in Grand Forks.

Alfred Paul Langer was born March 4, 1937, to Joseph and Olivia (Zahler) Langer at Bluffton, Minnesota.  He attended St. John's Catholic Grade School in Bluffton and Wadena High School. After graduation, he served in the United States Army in France and Germany for 2 years. At the end of his service in the Army, he worked for Merickel Lumber Mills in Wadena. On August 27, 1960, he married Barbara Jansen of Staples, Minnesota. They moved to Grand Forks, ND, where he worked as a meat cutter for 6 years for Nash Finch Piggly Wiggly.  He started working for the University of North Dakota Dining Services on the first of March, 1966, as the Manager of Central Foods and food buyer. He worked there for 37 years before retiring, after which he began working for St. Vincent de Paul's/St. Joseph's in Grand Forks.

Al and his wife, Barbara, earned certification in the EPS course of theology in the Fargo Diocese. They were very involved in the Worldwide Marriage Encounter program. Besides speaking at 22 encounters, they served as one of 8 team couples on the National Board of Directors with Fr. Dennis Schue from 1973 through 1975.  Al was also active in Boy Scouts of America Troop 1 of St. Michael's Church for many years. He received the St. George Award given to men who served with a strong Christian background.  Starting in 1980, he was a member of the Board of Directors for St. Anne's Guest Home for over 25 years. In 2007 he was named to the Board of Directors of the St. Vincent de Paul operation in Grand Forks. Al was one of the sacristans at St. Michael's and became an Extra-ordinary Eucharistic Minister in 1973. On June 10, 2007, Al and Barb professed as Secular Franciscans in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Grand Forks group.

Al is survived by his wife, Barbara, his sons, Craig (Kay), Douglas (Laura), and Tom (Stacey) and his daughters, Beth Harris, Sue (Jay) Helming, and Carol Langer, 12 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.  Brothers: Ben (Zerrin) Langer of Hollywood, FL and Leo (Helen) of Marshall MN; Sister: Agnes Geiser of Bluffton, MN; Sister-in-law: Mary Langer of Wadena, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Olivia; brothers, Reinhold and Richard; sisters, Sr. Lydia, Bernadette, and Irene; sister-in-law, Isabelle; brothers-in-law, Arlan King, Richard Geiser, and Ron Corbett; a granddaughter, Jaime; and a great-granddaughter, Hailie Rae.

Memorials can be sent to St. Gianna's Maternity Home (Warsaw/Minto, ND), St. Michael's School Bridge Builders (Grand Forks), or St. Francis Scholarship at Sacred Heart School (East Grand Forks).

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 20, 2025, in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: One hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Thursday.
Recitation of the Rosary : 10:00 a.m. Thursday in St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Burial: Calvary North Cemetery in Grand Forks, ND.
Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota Army National Guard.
