Allan W. Smith, 79, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND.

Allan Wayne Smith was born on January 10, 1947, in Fargo, ND and was raised by his parents, Harold and Mae Zimmerman in Chokio, MN. He graduated from Alberta High School in 1965 and went on to attend Alexandria Technical and Community College. Allan enlisted in the United States Air Force on October 11, 1966, and during the Vietnam War, served as a Security Policeman and Sentry Dog Handler in Taiwan. He was honorably discharged from active military Service, with the rank of Sergeant, on October 9, 1970, at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

Allan married Marie Deschene on February 7, 1970, in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Argyle, MN.  Allan and Marie moved to East Grand Forks, MN and Allan was employed with Gamble-Robertson Foods and Food Service of America. Later, he was employed in the Maintenance Department of the North Dakota Vision Services/School for the Blind and in the Food Service Department at the University of North Dakota.  Allan and Marie moved to Grand Forks in 1996.

He was proud of his military service and considered his trip with the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to be one of the greatest and most memorable experiences of his life.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bird watching, and classical cars. His 1956 Crown Victoria was his pride and joy.

Allan had a love for life and an everlasting love for his family.  He was a loving, wonderful, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; a daughter, Traci (Dan) Pind; former son-in-law, Darin Peterson; grandchildren, Kaylie (Peterson) Streitz, Devin Peterson, Logan Pind, and Kyle Pind; a great-granddaughter, Kinzley Streitz; a special nephew, Keith (Jackie) Peterson; family members and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Terri Peterson, a brother, Smokey Smith, sisters, Dixie Bengston and Connie Boe, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Ila Deschene, many family members and his faithful hunting dog, Misty.

Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2026, in the Norman Funeral Home Chapel.
Family Greeting: One hour prior to the service in the funeral home on Monday.
Interment: Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
Military Honors : Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the Grand Forks Air Force Base Honor Guard.
