Darrell James Kvernen, age 67 of East Grand Forks, MN, died on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at his home.

Darrell James Kvernen, a son of Orion and Marion (Bjerke) Kvernen, was born on June 11, 1954 at Portland, ND. He was raised in Portland, ND and graduated from Mayville-Portland high school in 1972. Darrell went on to attend Mayville State College. After his education, he moved to Grand Forks, ND and began working as a firefighter at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. He was married to Rhonda Melland for a time. Darrell then moved to Gillette, WY and worked for Halliburton driving truck. He returned to Grand Forks and worked in Grand Forks as a Correctional Officer. On June 29, 1990, he married to Margaret Ackerland in Grand Forks.  They moved to East Grand Forks and Darrell returned to his favorite job, truck driving. He owned and operated his own truck for a time. Darrell began working for Altendorf Trucking in Minto, ND., E.W. Wylie Trucking in Fargo, Porta-Mix Concrete in Grand Forks and Transystem in East Grand Forks.

Due to health reasons, Darrell was forced to retire. He and Margaret have continued to make East Grand Forks their home.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, going to the lake and watching the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. Darrell enjoyed boxing in his younger years. He was a state championship wrestler for Mayville-Portland high school and held the quickest pin record for many years. He received several trophies for arm wrestling and was an avid pool player.

He is survived by his wife Margaret: his mother, Marion Brasel; sons, Shawn (Kristie) Kvernen, Tom (Kim) Ackerland and Paul Ackerland; grandsons, Jacob and Joshua Kvernen; brothers, Paul (Tamarie) Kvernen, Dale (Kim) Kvernen: sisters, Terri (Lynn) Strand, Jenell (Ron) Braseth and Cheri Gregor.

Darrell was preceded in death by his father, Orion Kvernen; son, Chad Ackerland, and a sister, Geri Kvernen.

Funeral service: Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. in the Historic Norman Funeral Home in Grand Forks

Visitation : one hour before service time.

Interment: Aurdal Cemetery in Portland, ND.
