David "Dave" Lewandowski

David "Dave" Lewandowski, 66, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will forever cherish his kind heart, gentle spirit, and unmistakable personality.

Dave was born on January 24, 1960, in Tucson, Arizona, to Lawrence and Sharon (Rogers) Lewandowski. He grew up to become a man who never met a stranger and who had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen and loved.

Throughout his life, Dave wore many hats. He spent many years working as a taxi driver, bouncer, and security guard—jobs that allowed him to surround himself with people and gave him plenty of opportunities to talk, listen, and make connections. He was a familiar face throughout Grand Forks and could often be found walking or riding his bicycle; he truly enjoyed being part of the community around him.

Before an AVM changed the course of his life, Dave was an avid bowler and was proud to have bowled multiple perfect games throughout his life. He never met a stranger and could turn an ordinary encounter into a conversation worth remembering. One of his favorite memories was spending an entire night chatting at Perkins with Red Skeleton—a story that perfectly captured Dave's love of conversation and companionship.

Dave also enjoyed playing cards, spending time in the garden, and doing yard work, taking pride in keeping things neat and cared for. He had a deep love for animals and the natural world, especially horses, wolves, and eagles, which he admired greatly. No matter where he went, if there was a cat or dog nearby, Dave was sure to stop and give it some attention. He also loved children dearly and would light up whenever his nieces and nephews came to visit. A Coke was rarely far from his hand—often in the form of a two-liter bottle—and it became one of those familiar little things that everyone who knew Dave will remember.

Above all, Dave took great pride in being the oldest of eight children, a role he carried with a sense of responsibility, care, and quiet pride throughout his life.

Following his AVM, Dave's mobility was compromised, but his spirit remained strong. He continued to find joy in the simple things: visiting with nurses and caregivers, spending time outside, and watching his favorite television show, Cops. Most of all, he continued to value people and conversation. His gentle nature and ability to connect with others never left him.

Dave's family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Valley Senior Living and NDAD for the loving care, compassion, and support they provided to David and his family over the past nine years. Their kindness became an important part of Dave's life and brought comfort to those who loved him.

Dave will be deeply missed by his father, Lawrence; siblings, Joseph (Kristy) Lewandowski of Arvilla, ND; Elaine Johnson of Grand Forks, ND; Mary (Greg) Sand of Grand Forks, ND; Mark Lewandowski of San Antonio, TX; Robert (Jeanne) Lewandowski of Menomonie, WI; Chuck Lewandowski of Thompson, ND; and Julia (Steven) Brummer of Rosemount, MN; as well as 17 nieces and nephews, 18 great-nieces and nephews, one great-great-nephew and countless extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Lewandowski; grandparents Francis and Dolores Rogers and Augusta Lewandowski; niece Jaclyn Sand; great-nephew Raynor Lewandowski, and many other extended family members.

Memorial Liturgy: will Be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: one hour before service time in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery in Grand Forks, ND.
