Douglas Lee Petron

Douglas "Doug" Lee Petron, age 77, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Altru Hospital.

Doug was born on August 12, 1948, to Robert and Alice Petron. As the oldest of eight children, he spent his childhood creating memories in Kelliher, MN. Following his high school graduation, Doug proudly answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. He dedicated over 20 years of honorable service to the military, officially retiring in 1987. During his distinguished career in Space and Missile systems, he was highly decorated for his leadership and technical expertise. His military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Air Force Overseas Ribbon Long, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and the USAF NCO PME Graduate Ribbon, along with the Air Force Space and Missile Badge.

Following his military retirement, Doug seamlessly transitioned his technical skills into a variety of roles across the community. Blessed with an engineer's mind, he worked in building maintenance, as a factory mechanic, and in highly specialized positions repairing flight simulators. He even shared his extensive knowledge with the next generation during a brief stint teaching at the University of North Dakota (UND). Doug was a naturally analytical person who took immense pride in working with his hands and could fix, build, or figure out anything.

On May 17, 1969, Doug married the love of his life, Michele A. Nadeau. Together, they built a life rooted in love and devotion, raising three children: Danielle, Angelique, and Gavin.

While family time always held the absolute first place in his heart, Doug filled his free days pursuing a wide range of passions. He loved working on cars, diving into computer tech, tackling DIY projects around the house, and enjoying the occasional, lighthearted run to the casino. He also cherished special memories with those closest to him, including the unforgettable moment in June 2025 when he fulfilled a lifelong dream of going on a cruise, traveling to Alaska and Canada surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Alice Petron, and his sister, Kathy.

Doug's legacy lives on through his beloved wife, Michele; his children, Danielle, Angelique, and Gavin; and his five cherished grandchildren, Ethan Petron-Leske, Dylan Nelson, Ramsey Petron, Landon Petron, and Adeline Petron. He is also survived by his six siblings, Cindy (Marvin) Anderson, Randy (Anita) Petron, Peggy (Fred) Kelm, Connie (Bill) Kelm, Candace Petron, and Kirt (Roxanne) Petron, as well as a large community of extended family, nieces, nephews, and friends who valued his sharp mind and steady presence.

Memorial Contribution: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Doug's honor. Donations may be directed to the family to help establish a lasting memorial or towards a cause of their choosing.

Celebration of Life: A casual gathering to celebrate Doug's life and legacy will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Lincoln Park (Shelter 4), located at 120 Euclid Ave, Grand Forks, ND. Family and friends are invited to come share stories, remember his life, and celebrate a man who gave so much to those he loved.

Military Honors: 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2026 at the Norman Funeral Home.   Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the Grand Forks Air Force Base Honor Team.
