George A. Freeman , 78, of Grand Forks ND, died on April 1, 2020 at his home.

George Alan Freeman was born February 19, 1942 the son of Gisli August and Virginia Lorene (Nyhart) Freeman in Grand Forks, ND. He grew up in Salinas, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Mandan, ND, and Bismarck, ND. Most of his younger years were spent in Mandan and he graduated from Bismarck High School in 1960. He was active in sports in Bismarck High School playing American Legion Baseball, football, and track. He attended college at NDSU, Bismarck Junior College, and later UND. He joined the ND National Guard in 1964. He married Wanda Grevious in Bismarck January 22, 1966. George & Wanda were divorced in 1982. They moved to Grand Forks in late 1966 where he was employed at KBM, Inc. as a surveyor. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt in the ND National Guard in 1967 and graduated from the Engineer Officers School in Ft. Belvoir, VA. He resigned from the National Guard as a 1st Lt and Commanding Officer of the Support & Maint Platoon, 188th Engr Co in Grand Forks in 1971. In 1971 he began employment at Minnkota Power Cooperative in Grand Forks and retired in 2002 as a Senior Engineering Assistant after 31 years.

George enjoyed hunting, fishing, and photography in his younger years. After his father died in 1993 he began working on his family history and genealogy. He found great joy in meeting relatives he had never met, collecting books and pictures and making hundreds of family history books for them. After retiring he became active in the Icelandic National League, the Icelandic Communities Association of Mountain, ND, Minnkota Genealogy Society of Grand Forks, Minot Icelandic Heritage Society, FM Icelandic Klub, and the ND State Genealogy Society. He became an author by compiling the Pembina County Pioneer Daughter Biographies. Recently George was an editor genealogist for the Icelandic Roots database. George and his sister Janet compiled 850 of their mother's recipes and published a recipe book named "Fed With Love" for family and friends. George helped many people by fixing their computers and loved working on his own computers. He was a lifetime member of NRA. His greatest joy came from being with his children and grandchildren.

George was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous in Grand Forks. His last drink was on November 5, 1978. He liked to say that as a youngster he wanted to be a good person, do good things, and be accepted by other people, so God made him a recovering alcoholic. At the time of his death he was sober 41 years.

He is survived by his three children; Greg Freeman, Grand Forks, ND, Melissa (Joel) Walski, East Grand Forks, MN and Meghan (Brad) Vollrath, Grand Forks; grandchildren, Dylan, Brianna, Kaylee, & Adam Walski, Drake and Autumn Vollrath; brother-in-law, David Wolf, Bismarck, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother's Larry & Tom Freeman and sisters Betty Ann Wolf & Janet Freeman.

Graveside Memorial Service: Will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, ND at a later date.
Military Honors: Accorded at the time of interment.
