Hazel J. Ackerman , 103 of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Reynolds, ND passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood, ND.

Hazel Jeanette Johnson was born December 18, 1917 in Grand Forks County the daughter of Herman and Julia (Tweten) Johnson. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school as well as Grand Forks Central High School. Hazel worked on the family farm until she met Vincent Ackerman. Vincent and Hazel were married on February 9, 1938 and were happily married for 68 years. They were long time farmers, lived and worked on the Ackerman family farm in rural Reynolds until moving to reside in Grand Forks, later in life.

Hazel was a woman of many great qualities. It was her strength and faith that made it possible to be a Tuberculosis survivor. Her family often talk about how their visits were always full of stories and laughter.  Hazel was a long-time member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Reynolds and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Forks. She was devoted to her church and loved participating and volunteering. When residing on the farm, Hazel was an active member of the local OTO Homemaker's Club where she became skilled at decorating, cooking, canning and was well known for her brunches. She spent countless hours in her vegetable garden and flower beds, but her biggest devotion was to her family.  Hazel was a daughter, a wife, a sister, a mother a grandmother, a great-grandmother and aunt.  She welcomed everyone with open arms to share in her life. This loving gentle soul will be missed.

Hazel is survived by her daughters, Karen (Jack) Skala, Mt. Iron, MN and Julie (Andrew) Luna, Lakeside, AZ; her son, Jason (Elaine) Ackerman, East Grand Forks, MN; grandchildren, Roberta (Paul) Bloomquist, Kimberly (John) Witthauer, Jacquelyn (Dan) Sojka; great-grandchildren, Thomas and Phillip Bloomquist, Ava and Jack Witthauer.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vincent her parents; a sister Lillian Erickson; brothers, Orlando, Walter "Buddy" and Kenneth, as well as a son-in-law, Andrew Luna.

Hazel's family would like to thank everyone at Northwood Deaconess Health Center for the care and compassion given to our mother as well as Fr. Gerard Braun for the spiritual guidance and pastoral care given to her.

Funeral Liturgy: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2021 in the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation: One hour prior to the liturgy in the funeral home on Saturday.
Burial: In the spring at Calvary Cemetery, Reynolds, ND.
