Mary "Cres" Crescence Compton, age 91, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026 at Edgewood Vista in Grand Forks.

Cres was born on May 5, 1934 in Minot, ND, the daughter of Harold and Florence (McGinn) Ehlers. Cres graduated from Bishop Ryan High School in Minot and went on to attended Minot State University. Cres married Richard Compton on December 28, 1954 in Minot.

Cres and Richard began their life together in Belfield ND, where Richard started his teaching and coaching career and Cres was a stay at home mom to their two young children. They moved to Drake, ND, in 1957, where Richard continued to teach and coach until 1959 when they moved to Bottineau, ND, along with their 4 children. Cres and her family would stay in Bottineau for the next 10 years. Their last move was to Grand Forks, ND, in 1969. Cres began working at Agassiz Enterprises as an Activities Director.

During her years in Grand Forks, she was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Cres would always see things in a positive light. She had a great sense of humor and kept it right up to the time of her passing. She enjoyed attending her children's and grandchildren's activities as long as she could get someone to go and buy her some popcorn. Her hobbies were golfing, shopping, and going out to eat.

Cres is survived by her daughter, Mary (Keith) Morehouse of Glasgow, MT, sons, Mike (Kris) Compton, Grand Forks, ND, Pat (Nancy) Compton of Bemidji, MN, and Jeff (Anne) Compton, Grand Forks, ND; nine grandchildren, Seth (Alicia) Morehouse, Luke (Keegan) Morehouse, Emilee (Matt) Poole, Glasgow, MT, Meghan (Willis) Stattelman, Grand Forks, ND, Katie (Mark) Yahna, Grand Forks, ND, Kaylee (Casey) Kriege, Bemidji, MN, Jeff (Kim) Compton, Morrisville, NC, Adam Compton and Hazel Shively, Portland, OR, Christopher (Sidney) Compton, West Fargo, ND, one niece, Julie Ehlers, Minot, ND; 27 great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter; sister and brother in law, Roxie and Terry Brundage, Loveland CO.

Cres was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, her parents, Harold and Florence, her brother, William and nephew, Mark Ehlers, sister and brother-in-law, Mitzi and Tom Dahle, Sioux Falls SD.

Funeral Liturgy: 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2026, in the Norman Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the funeral home on Friday.
Burial: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
