Matthew Gerszewski, age 59 of rural Warsaw passed away on Monday, November 1st, 2021 of natural causes, just yards of where his father died 35 years earlier, on the Gerszewski family farm.

Matthew Allen Gerszewski was born March 23rd, 1962 in Grafton North Dakota, to Adrian and Frances (Lizakowski) Gerszewski.

He grew up Northwest of Warsaw, and started raising crops and livestock at a very early age. All true farmers, including Matt, gripe about the headaches and heartaches of agriculture, but farming was in his blood until he took his last breath. He was educated at Grafton High School, he later studied diesel mechanic at AVTI in East Grand Forks, a skill that would serve him well through all his endeavors, especially farming. Matt was ever eager to help out many other farmers he knew. Having all his endorsements on his CDL and being exceptionally reliable, every trucking company wanted him to drive for them.

On September 5th, 1998, Matthew entered the holy sacrament of marriage to Jody (Jo) Peterka. The two had seen each other as children, as Jody's father would buy pigs from Matt's father, and both being on the timid side, they never spoke until later reintroduced by his future sister-in-law, Kris, as young adults. Ever since, the two were best friends and teammates through thick and thin.  Working the farm or the oilfield, or just hitting the road for the heck of it, they were rarely apart.

In addition to traveling, Matt most recently enjoyed attending daughter Katie's choral concerts at UND, and working in the shop, passing on his mechanical and agricultural knowledge and skills to his son Bennie.

Matt was tough and stoic but often deeply moved by the good in the world. He enjoyed perfectly cooked prime rib, the purr of a Cummins engine and memories of his snowmobiling trips. There was never a prouder father, more devoted husband and one couldn't ask for a better friend. Matthew was kind to animals and would afford time and effort to any that were suffering, so as to treat them as God would intend.

He was a faithful servant and a defender of the sanctity of life.

He is survived by his wife, Jody, daughter Katherine and son Benjamin, sister Jeanette and brother Arnold, and an amazing community of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his mother-in-law and father-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

Memorials preferred to Park River Pregnancy Help Center, St. Gianna's Maternity Home in Warsaw, ND and Minto Fire and Rescue.

Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation: One hour before service time.

Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery in Minto, ND.
