Michael C. Smith , 86, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2025, in Valley Senior Living on Columbia in Grand Forks.

Born October 19, 1938, in Aitkin, MN, Mike dedicated twenty-five years of his life to serving his country in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant specializing in missile electronics. Following his military retirement, Mike joined McDonnell Douglas aerospace as a specialist on F15 simulators, a position that included an assignment in Saudi Arabia. He later joined Northwest Airlines as an electronic technician working on aircraft flight simulators until his full retirement, completing a lifelong career in aviation electronics.

Mike married the love of his life, Shirley A. Smith, on October 27, 1956, in Washburn, ND. Their beautiful love story spanned over 68 years until Shirley's passing in February 2025. Together they raised four children: Lillian Bell, Michael C. Smith Jr., Richard Smith, and Kevin Smith. Their family grew to include seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mike and Shirley shared many interests, including bowling in leagues together throughout the years.

Mike enjoyed time spent outdoors, especially camping, fishing, and hunting with his family. He was an avid reader and enjoyed relaxing in his chair while watching his favorite Western or sci-fi television shows. Above all, Mike's greatest joy came from the time spent with his loved ones.

A dedicated serviceman and loving family man, Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His strength, unwavering devotion to family, and technical skillset leave a lasting legacy.

He is survived by his children, Lillian (Dave) Bell, Michael Smith, Jr., Richard (Karin) Smith and Kevin Smith; a sister-in-law, Donna Smith; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl Smith and Donald (Mel) Smith; and a sister, Susie (Dan) Squires.

Funeral Service: 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2025, in the Norman Funeral Home Chapel, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service in the funeral home on Tuesday.
Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the Grand Forks Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Burial: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Mercer Hillside Cemetery, Mercer, ND.
