Robert Abney, also known as Umar Mustafa Abduljabbar, a practicing Muslim for nearly 45 years, his faith was a cornerstone of his life—guiding his compassion, humility, and commitment to family and service.

Umar was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and beloved member of his community, passed away on November 6th, 2025, in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Umar carried with him the energy, humor, and resilience of the city throughout his life. For over 25 years, he dedicated himself to serving the people of New York as a proud Bus Operator of the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Known for his hard work, reliability, and good-natured spirit, Umar took great pride in contributing to the daily rhythm of the city he loved.

In his later years, Umar retired to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he found peace in a quieter setting. He is survived by his loving children—Ibn, Isa, Garren, and Fatima—and his cherished granddaughter, Zoey, who brought him immense joy and pride. He also leaves behind a host of siblings, nieces, nephews, and friends who will remember his kindness, wisdom, and humor.

Umar's life was defined by faith, family, and perseverance. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services and Janazah (Islamic funeral prayer) was held in accordance with Islamic tradition in Fargo, North Dakota. The family extends their gratitude to all who have offered prayers and support during this time.
