Vernon E. Gornowicz , 93, lifelong resident of Grand Forks, ND passed away at his home on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Vernon Eugene Gronowicz was born the son of Dominick and Helen (Ebertowski) Gornowicz, in Pulaski Township, ND on June 29th, 1932.The long and storied life of Vernon began when he enlisted in the United States Army, February of 1953, serving eight honorable  years. After serving, he was employed by the City of Grand Forks as a foreman on the Street Department for approximately 23 years. During this time, Vernon started a refuse business in 1959 "Vern's Refuse" and later sold it in 1997. While pursuing his business, he met his lifelong partner and love of his life, Judith Ann Jacobson. They were wed on October 1, 1956, and spent over 60 years of life together, welcoming five beautiful children into this world, Tammy Azure, Cynthia Gornowicz, Jennifer Gornowicz, Michael Gornowicz, Rachel Gornowicz; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Vern retired in 1997 after which he and Judy enjoyed spending time in the Pembina Gorge improving the land, building trails, ranger riding and playing pinochle with friends and family.

Vern was a giant among the Grand Forks Community. He was fair, decent and honorable to everyone, including those who were not as fortunate in life. Throughout his career, Vern was well known for his sharp mind, hard work ethic and his willingness to help. If you were willing to work hard, Vern was willing to help you. He believed the best business was small business and championed this cause his entire life.

Vernon is survived by his daughters, Tammy Azure and Rachel Gornowicz and son, Michael Gornowicz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, daughters, Cynithia and Jennifer.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 21, 2025. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation: 5:00 p.m.to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service, Wednesday, August 20, 2025 in the Historic Norman Funeral Home.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Thursday.

Interment: 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2025, in Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.

A reception will follow the Mass at the Eagles Club in East Grand Forks, MN.

Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota Army National Guard.
